Dudley Moore's fame as a beloved comic actor and Hollywood movie star, and his complex and highly conflicted life story, has rather overshadowed his singular gifts as a witty and imaginative jazzman and composer. A scintillating live performance laced through with anecdote and insight, this heartfelt tribute - by an outstanding quartet - revisits Dud's dazzlingly fertile musicianship and reveals the richness and sheer likability of his music, with irresistible feel-good sounds alongside heart-rending beauty and poignancy.

Dudley Moore (1935-2002), achingly funny comic as part of the Pete 'n' Dud comedy duo in the 1960s, beloved comic actor in Hollywood in the 1970s and 1980s, is well known.

Perhaps fewer know about Dudley Moore, pianist - the virtuoso brilliantly exploiting the stylistic possibilities gifted to him by Errol Garner and Oscar Peterson in late night sessions at Peter Cook's Establishment Club in 1960s Soho, dazzling appearances on BBC TV's Not Only But Also, sparkling Decca trio recordings, and big band appearances and recordings with the Johnny Dankworth Orchestra.

And perhaps fewer still, Dudley Moore, composer - purveyor of quirky, imaginative jazz originals and the witty music for Bedazzled (1967) and 30 Is A Dangerous Age, Cynthia (1968), nuanced movie scores far superior to the movies themselves.

'I can't imagine not having music in my life, playing for myself or for other people. If I was asked, 'Which would you give up?', I'd have to say acting.' Dudley Moore

In this vibrant, sophisticated and moving homage, the Chris Ingham Quartet revisits Dud's music from the 1960s when he was a UK TV star and his fertile musicianship was at its height, years before his Hollywood fame. Justly honouring this prematurely lost and sadly missed jazz hero with delightful music, spiced with gentle anecdote and insight, this is an evening of intimate and heartfelt pleasure. Some pieces are quintessential expressions of the bright, optimistic, swinging 60s, others are deeply poignant, personal expressions of a darker, more complex world. Sometimes there is a unique and bittersweet mix of the two.

Sell-out audiences at the Royal Albert Hall's Elgar Room, Soho's PizzaExpress Jazz Club and the 2017 EFG London Jazz Festival have been genuinely enchanted by Dudley's evocative music, moved by his fraught life story and intrigued by how his career choices and enormous fame as an actor conspired to eclipse his reputation as a great British musician.
